The Best of 2011

As 2011 comes to an end, I find myself thinking about what a great year it has been. My last year as a “twenty-something”, celebrating nine years of marriage and six years at Fairwood Church; I watched my boys grow, added to the family, and tried new things.  It was a productive year. Below is a few of my favorite events that all took place in the last twelve months.

April 3rd

London Marie was born! When DJ and I got married, we were set on having two kids. But when my second son was born in 2007, I couldn’t stop feeling like we needed to try one more time – I really wanted my girl. I’m so glad that we did, because now we have our Lunny Bunny. She’s absolutely beautiful, already bossy, and has made our family complete. She’s my girly girl – with her toes always painted pink, a huge bow on her head and at only eight months old, she already shows her brothers that she plans to be in charge. I adore her smile and thank God for her every day.

August 27th

Throughout the year, my church does a variety of big gives. From Thanksgiving dinners to Christmas gifts, we love to bless our community. Although I enjoy them all, the backpack give we do each year in August is my favorite. Having kids of my own, I know the importance of making sure they have a backpack and all the supplies needed to make it a great school year. That is why it means so much to me to make sure that the kids in the Renton community also have what they need for a successful year. This last August, we gave out 750 backpacks in less than 30 minutes. While it was a bummer to tell people that we had run out of backpacks so quickly, it also showed us that we are definitely meeting a need. In August of 2012 we plan to give away at least 1000 backpacks. Stay tuned for my post this upcoming Monday to see how I plan to personally start saving for this great event.

September 15th

I have always enjoyed writing, I get it from my mom; so when friends encouraged me to start a blog this year, I put a lot of thought into it. Reading blogs from some of my favorite writers: Brian Dolleman, Stephen Furtick, Christine Caine and Jon Acuff, had me thinking – why would anyone want to read what I had to say? Why would anyone want to hear my story? But the continued encouragement from my husband and friends made me do it, and I’m so glad that I did. While I’m no Beth Moore, I have enjoyed sharing with you all what God has done in my life and what He puts on my heart. The encouraging emails and comments I receive mean the world to me, and I thank you so very much for taking the time to read what I have to share.

September 25th

My dad turned 64 on this day and we were there to celebrate with him – DJ and I packed up all three kids and jumped on a plane to Southern California to be there. Watching my dad with his grandkids made the stress of traveling with young ones and the long hours so worth it. As he held his granddaughter for the first time and played games with his two grandsons, I knew this meant the world to him. Taking the kids to Disneyland during that same trip made it a pretty great family vacation.

It was a year full of new adventures, great memories and important lessons.  I look forward to what God has in store for me and my family in 2012. Here’s wishing you and yours a Happy New Year.
