Our Kitchen Renovation

It’s finally done! And it’s beautiful!

DJ and I decided two weeks ago that it was time to stop talking about “someday painting the kitchen cabinets white” (really I was just saying that…) and time to just go ahead and actually do it.

Our kitchen is small, especially for this family of five – and the new construction style oak cabinets simply didn’t fit our look.

We decided to make it feel a bit more like us.

Before we started the process we had a handful of people tell us not to paint the cabinets. They explained how much time it took: hours upon hours of tedious work…

Well I say if you’ve been thinking about – you should absolutely paint your cabinets.

Yes it is a ridiculous amount of work to do it correctly

Yes you will eat more take-out than you’re probably used to

Yes your kids will watch more TV than normal

Yes you will probably cry at least once because your house is a complete disaster

But it’s so very worth it in the end!

Our kitchen renovation took us two weeks to complete – and that was mainly only evening hours.

We painted all the cabinets, installed hardware on every door and drawer, added a white subway tile backsplash and took down one cabinet so we could instead have open wood shelving with pipe brackets.

DJ even made and installed a new light fixture for above the sink that fits the industrial feel that we were going for.

The new paint makes the kitchen look bigger and brighter.

I’m completely thrilled with it.

Now to wait and see which kid messes it up first…
