My Top 10 Favorite Children’s Books

I absolutely love reading children’s books.

The humor, the emotions, the characters, the story – a great children’s book brings it all together.

I dream of having a library in my house someday; one whole shelf will be dedicated to the books I plan to write.

Having three young kids makes a great excuse for me to buy and read them often and I have many, many favorites.

Today I’ll share 10 of my favorite picture books with you and yes, it was very difficult to narrow it down.

These are books that I could read over and over and I’d encourage you to either add them to your own collection or look for them at your local library.

I hope you enjoy them as much as my kids and I do.

  1. Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?

By: Shel Silverstein

Looking for a new pet? Bored with cats and dogs? There are lots of things a rhinoceros can do around the house.

Honestly you can’t go wrong with anything written by Shel Silverstein. His “Where the Sidewalk Ends” and “A Light in the Attic” are also favorites of mine.

  1. The Kiss that Missed.

By: David Melling

A brave and fearless knight is sent out to retrieve the little prince’s lost goodnight kiss from his dad. The illustrations in this book are what make it a favorite of mine.

  1. The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash.

By: Trinka Hakes Noble.

Anything illustrated by Steven Kellogg is bound to be a great book. This is a classic from when I was a kid and now my kids love it too.

  1. The Dot.

By: Peter H. Reynolds

I have two books on my list by Peter Reynolds because he’s that good. This is my personal favorite of all his children’s books. Vashti’s teacher is the hero of this story.

guess how much

  1. Guess How Much I Love You.

By: Sam McBratney

The story of little nutbrown hare and his daddy. A simply sweet story.

a sick day

  1. A Sick Day for Amos McGee

By: Philip C. Stead

Friends come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In Amos McGee’s case, all sorts of species too! You need to read this book.

  1. Jamberry

By: Bruce Degen

My son would ask us to read him this book every night when he was younger. DJ and I have it memorized. It will always be a favorite in our house.

  1. Ish.

By: Peter H. Reynolds

In this story Ramon loses his confidence. He wants to give up; until his sister shows him why he shouldn’t.

the hueys

  1. The Hueys in the New Sweater

By: Oliver Jeffers

The simple illustrations in this book are what make it so amazing. And you’ll love the mischievous behaving Hueys.

  1. The Miracle of Christmas: A Sheepdog’s Story.

By: Angela Hagebusch

I couldn’t very well write a list of my favorite children’s book without including one of my own. This is the first book I ever wrote and something I’m very proud of. It isn’t perfect and you won’t find it on any bestseller lists, but it was a dream of mine that was made into a reality.

Someday I hope this book will sit with many others that I dream of writing.

Now you share.
